Thor by Russell Dauterman II

In 2018, Marvel named Russell Dauterma a Young Gun, one of the industry's top artists to watch.  Recent projects include Marvel’s event series WAR OF THE REALMS and work on Marvel’s X-Men titles, including GIANT-SIZE X-MEN with writer Jonathan Hickman.

A graduate of Boston College, Russell went on to receive a master’s degree in costume design and illustration from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Thor by Russell Dauterman I

Russell Dauterman is an American comic book illustrator known for work on Supurbia for Boom! Studios and Nightwing for DC Comics. Before breaking into comics Dauterman served as a costume illustrator in the movie industry, working on such films as Captain America: The First Avenger.

In July 2014, Marvel Comics announced that Dauterman would be the artist on Thor series with writer Jason Aaron, which would debut that October, and feature a female Thor.

Dueling Dragons!

This week saw two remarkable displays of artistry with a common theme. Clay Mann and Rachelle Rosenberg  faced Gambit with an other-dimensional horde of three-headed dragon-like gods that tried to make their way to Earth.

Meanwhile, over in Superman, Kenneth Rockafort and Sunny Gho brought a kryptonian menace to Metropolis. The species' name is Tripedal curosiananiun; also a three-headed creature, this one with two of them in its paws. If we had another one of those Marvel vs DC crossovers, which of these two creatures do you think would win a confrontation?

Artist Showcase :: Brett Booth

Brett Booth is an American comic book artist. He is best known for his work on Backlash, a character he co-created with Jim Lee at the Wildstorm Studios. Following his Wildstorm work, Mr. Booth has also illustrated the exploits of some of Marvel Comics' best known characters such as Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.

The artist then expanded his career when he contributed illustrations for the Anthropomorphic How-To book Freaks! How To Draw Fantastic Fantasy Creatures. He is currently active as a paleoartist drawing dinosaurs for various publications and websites as well as continuing to draw comic books. Currently, Mr. Booth is working for DC Comics' Teen Titans series. You may visit his Art Blog to see more of his great work.

Artist Showcase :: Jim Lee

Jim Lee is a Korean-American comic book artist, writer, editor and publisher. He first broke into the industry in 1987 as an artist for Marvel Comics, illustrating titles such as Alpha Flight and Punisher War Journal, before gaining a great deal of popularity on The Uncanny X-Men. X-Men #1, the 1991 spin-off series premiere that Lee penciled and co-wrote with Chris Claremont, remains the best-selling comic book of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Enticed by the idea of being able to exert more control over his own work, in 1992, Lee accepted the invitation to join six other artists who broke away from Marvel to form Image Comics, which would publish their creator-owned titles.  Lee's group of titles was initially called Aegis Entertainment before being christened Wildstorm Productions, and published Lee's initial title WildC.A.T.s, which Lee pencilled and co-wrote, and other series created by Lee in the same shared universe.

Because he felt his role as publisher interfered with his role as an artist, Lee left Image Comics and sold Wildstorm to DC Comics in late 1998, enabling to focus once again on art.  In 2003 he collaborated on a 12-issue run on Batman with writer Jeph Loeb. "Hush" became a runaway sales success. He followed this up in 2004 by illustrating "For Tomorrow", a 12-issue story in Superman by writer Brian Azzarello.

    

In February 2010 Lee was named alongside Dan DiDio as Co-Publisher of DC Comics.  In May 2011, DC announced a massive revamp and relaunch of its entire superhero line, at the forefront of the revamp is a new Justice League title, illustrated by Lee, and written by DC Comics' Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. The book will spend the first six months updating the origin of the Justice League, and will feature the return of DC's primary superheroes to the team.

Artist Showcase :: Tyler Kirkham

The first artist I chose for this new section of the blog, is one whose art I became familiar with only recently, but quickly he has become one of my favorite pencillers.  Currently he is in Green Lantern: New Guardians, and his name is Tyler Kirkham.

Tyler Kirkham was born and raised it Utah. He grew up loving art, and has always enjoyed drawing. He really found a love for comics in the early 90s when Image Comics came on the scene. At that moment he knew what he wanted to do with his life. After going to countless conventions and sending out lots of samples, his first paid art gig was drawing for a local newspaper. He later landed a job drawing an indy book called "The Gift."

Tyler has worked on titles such as Strykeforce, Tomb Raider, The Darkness, Transformers, Amazing Spiderman, X-Men Phoenix Warsong, and Ultimate Fantastic 4 to name just a few. His work has been featured on many Web sites and in magazines, like FHM, Wizard, Nintendo Power, and Imagine FX among others. He's also done video game concept work and some novel and book covers. He's currently working for DC Comics and also developing his own stories and ideas with hopes to get them on the shelves in the near future.
