Avengers vs. X-Men #5

Writers: Aaron, Bendis, Brubaker, Fraction, Hickman
Artist: John Romita Jr.

The first act of AvX concludes with the arrival of the Phoenix and a wacky twist. The Good: The stray fighting is replaced by a contained confrontation with less background characters. Hope's admission and prompt action upon realizing she was wrong make it easier to like and sympathize with her. The unexpected turn of events does away with predictability, at least for a while. The Bad: Why would Cap take Hawkeye and Black Widow to what is expected to be a decisive battle that includes a cosmic entity, is beyond comprehension. Namor vs. The Thing for the 5th time since the event started, Cyclops shooting at Cap, and Wolverine getting cut, mauled, and burnt, are all overkill. The ending twist is a rehash of Fear Itself where funny talking beings took over random characters. At least the X-Men seem to be getting a breather.  John Romita Jr. ends his stint with unimpressive artwork and lots of almost blank pages.

  1. 100% percent agree. I'm a big art Nazi and I thought the magnitude of the situation demanded a better hand in the illustration. I can't understand how an art editor can say this is acceptable. Not a huge fan of AvX so far, and this issue didn't help.

  2. my point of view as a Xmen fan.i'm just read avx 6 first look.no need to tell avengers take down one by one before some thing happened.like AOA and other stories. so "The Mighty Avengers" need some new big villains.also Marvel wants kill at least one of the Xmen like always.A vs X like this.whatever future twists still it's bully avengers show.i'm thinking Xmen writers lost their mind or forced to make story for avengers.there are big flaws like Gambit fights same time in 2 places and magneto needs a teleporter for moon.please stop spoiled Xmen characters.
