Things go from bad to worse for Gambit and his female companion when the relic that had burrowed into his chest finally brings them to its desired destination and opens a portal to another dimension. The larger-than-life creatures on the other side are the highlight of the issue; Clay Mann draws some fantastic dragons -to give them a name- and the care and detail he puts into them are almost palpable. That's pretty much everything that goes well in this installment; there is not a lot of story to talk about, since the resolution is quite underwhelming and defeats the purpose of all that build up that's been taken place the past few months. The artwork is disrupted again with Leonard Kirk's collaboration; however, Rachelle Rosenberg does a great job tying it all together. It seems that lately it's been up to the colorists to bring the cohesiveness to these pieces, and their work is not always recognized.

Gambit #3

A game that started as a Mission: Impossible tryout for Remy LeBeau, has now turned into Raiders of the Lost Arc, and this time the prize is his own life. In an attempt to expel the parasite that has burrowed into his body and that is slowly leeching all his energy, Gambit and his companion venture into the Guatemalan jungle, and what they find is way more than what they can handle. Today will be about the art: Leonard Kirk's artistic collaboration may have been the result of deadline issues; however, it becomes disrupting to the story flow, especially considering it is the most action-loaded sequence of the chapter. It would have been interesting to see Clay Mann's take on that extremely dynamic scene with all the acrobatics and small panels. The last page is a beautiful splash colored by Rachelle Rosenberg with a cinematic angle that transitions the characters to yet another genre: welcome to Dungeons and Dragons!

Gambit #2

Gambit's return to a life of thievery quickly takes a wrong turn when the relic he stole releases a creature that invades his chest cavity. While last issue pictured Remy's mission as no more than a game, this time there is a pinch of desperation in his monologue and actions when he has to steal again. A troubled, less confident Gambit is more enjoyable than the arrogant Cajun he is depicted like most of the time; whether this is the result of the creature inside him, or a new angle Asmus wants to take on the character, remains to be seen. Compared to the first issue, the art undergoes a big change: inks and coloring go for a traditional style rather than the fine lines and watercolors previously used; there is no detriment to the final product, it is just not different from everything else anymore. What remains the same is the fantastic work of Clay Mann, who seems to have found a specific theme in this title, but more of that next month. Good issue.

Gambit #1

Marvel gives the charming mutant thief another chance at an ongoing title, this time reined in by writer and performer James Asmus. While his current duties have turned Gambit from hero to teacher, this new series focuses on the more naughty aspects of the character; and it is not just the thieving, but also the smooth and seductive ways of Mr. LeBeau's that take the forefront in the book. Speaking of, Remy's charismatic and downright sexy qualities are visually played out to perfection by artist Clay Mann; the words cool and hot come to mind at the same time when trying to describe his pencils. Seth Mann uses super-fine ink lines that set the stage for Rachelle Rosenberg's beautiful watercolors, thus delivering picture-like renditions in every page. With a mix of James Bond and Mission: Impossible, Once a Thief... is a fantastic new beginning for this fan favorite.
