Avengers vs X-Men #1

The event kicks off with Nova heralding the arrival of the Phoenix, and Earth's Mightiest coming to aid him. This part of the story is very dramatic, charged with action and heroics, and relying strongly on John Romita Jr.'s pencils; while in Utopia, the same tired plot with Cyclops and Hope Summers continues playing. The Phoenix-Jean Grey history is simplified in such a manner that it seems more like a retcon; after all, the cosmic creature never killed the former Marvel Girl. Even this early, the seeds are planted for this to be an "all about Wolverine" story. The incident that triggers the much anticipated confrontation is very well written, even though no effort is made to make anyone sympathize with Cyclops; he acts like a jerk the whole time. Once again, the Avengers come off as the regal team, while the Cyclops-Emma-Namor-Magneto-and-everyone-else group falls short.

  1. u need to be a little less confrontational in your reviews. Tell us something why you think Cyclops acted like a jerk. It seems plausible this is a PRO-AVENGERS view on this.. I don't know if I can trust this source, I can tell the blogger is white and can't view this from a minority stand point. Cyclops cares about mutants first, humans second. They are on the age of extinction. Cyclops is right in his own way Hope is there prophet

  2. I didn't want to be spoilery, but you see... Cyclops is kicking Hope in the stomach while she's down because he cares for her. Seemed like a thing jerks do. And I agree with you, the closing remark is tilted towards the Avengers camp, which is weird, because I have always been an X-Men guy; in the end makes me feel I am being objective. Thank you for your feedback!

  3. I'm a huge X-Men fan and I completely disagree with you here. I don't think this will be a Wolverine story. It will be a focus on Hope and the possible rebirth of mutants. And I personally think that Cap was wrong. He didn't come to the X-Men in an act of friendship or peaceful confrontation. He came expecting a war and he brought an army to fight it. Is Cyclops an ass? Maybe. He's being influenced by Emma Frost, Namor, and Magneto for god's sake. Was his kicking Hope an act of douchery? Yes. Still, his people are on the edge of extinction and he is doing everything to prevent it. That kind of pressure will cause a person to make some bad decisions. Still, the Avengers have no business interfering in X-Men issues. They want to do something, go fight the Phoenix. Hope is currently innocent. Right now, the Avengers were trespassing and threatening one of Cyclops' family. Cyclops was protecting his people. That's just my opinion.

  4. Hi Anonymous, thank you for providing another point of view to the discussion! I am an X-Men guy as well, and that makes it harder to be harsh on them. The way I see it, Cap came to take Hope into custody, he does not mean to harm her, and even Emma thought it was Hope's choice whether to go or not; she knew the Avengers would not hurt her. That was not the X-Men's attitude when the teams met to decide the Scarlet Witch's fate... they were going for the jugular, and the Avengers did not freak out on them. About Wolverine... we'll see... we'll see ;)
